Kathmandu: Member of the House of Representatives Sumana Shrestha has drawn the government’s attention to the implementation of embossed number plates, raising concerns over its justification and the confusion it has created among citizens. In a letter to the Department of Transport Management on Monday, MP Shrestha demanded clear answers to several issues surrounding the installation of embossed number plates.
Stating that citizens continue to face questions, complaints, and confusion, Shrestha sought clarification on the necessity of embossed plates, the installation process, pricing, and the burden it places on the public.
She questioned why installation has been made mandatory for both new and old vehicles, the differences in security features, the daily installation capacity at offices across the country, the current status of implementation, and the reason behind delays in writing provincial names in Devanagari script as ordered by the Supreme Court.
Her letter also highlighted widespread complaints about the high cost of embossed plates and demanded a justification with quality guarantees. She further asked why citizens face problems when details in the bill book are not updated after installation, and why the embossed plate database has not yet been linked to other service databases.
Shrestha also expressed suspicion that additional financial burdens are being imposed on citizens by tying the plate installation to vehicle tax and fines. She has sought clarification on whether the current process or fees can be revised.
