Kathmandu: Alongside the new iPhone 17 series, Apple has introduced a special charger called the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max. It is the first charger in the world to support the USB PD (Power Delivery) 3.2 AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) protocol, making it more advanced and efficient than conventional chargers.
The charger delivers some of the benefits of a 60W adapter in a compact 40W package. Thanks to the AVS protocol, it can supply multiple voltage options, allowing smartphones, laptops, and other devices to charge more accurately and efficiently.
Batteries in phones and laptops do not continuously charge at maximum input for safety, efficiency, and longevity. Instead, the charging speed slows as the battery fills up. With AVS, the power source can fine-tune voltage output, keeping it closer to the device’s ideal requirements. This enables faster charging without overheating.
USB PD 3.2 AVS works as a smart communication system between the iPhone 17 and the charger. It adjusts voltage and current in small increments, from 3.3 volts to 21 volts, so charging remains quick, safe, and cool.
Through USB-C, the iPhone 17 communicates with the charger: requesting more power when the battery is low and reducing input once it nears 80 percent. This balance allows fast charging (35W or higher) while protecting long-term battery health.
The adapter cannot maintain a continuous 60W output like a dedicated 60W charger. For this reason, Apple markets it as a 40W charger with “60W Max” capability, not a full 60W device.
Apple claims the iPhone 17 series can charge up to 50 percent in just 20 minutes when paired with the new $39 Dynamic Power Adapter. Until other manufacturers such as Anker release USB PD 3.2 AVS-compatible models, Apple’s charger will be the only option to achieve these speeds.
This innovation is expected to set a new benchmark in charging efficiency and battery care for mobile devices.
