Kathmandu: The government has announced a dedicated health hotline and free ambulance service for senior citizens. The services will be introduced on the occasion of the fifth National Senior Citizens Day by the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens.
The process to operate the 1115 health hotline has been initiated in coordination with the Ministry of Health. The hotline is intended to directly register health-related problems and complaints of senior citizens with the concerned government agencies. Once operational, senior citizens will be able to report issues at any time.
The government has also announced plans to provide free ambulance services for senior citizens in all seven provinces. Preparatory work is underway, and the service is expected to be implemented within the next month.
The Ministry of Health has stated that upgrading work has begun at senior citizen ashrams following observations made during monitoring of the Pashupati Old Age Home. The upgrades aim to address shortages of health workers and ambulances.
Beyond health services, the government is also planning additional facilities for senior citizens in the transportation sector. Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Shraddha Shrestha said coordination is underway with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to provide discounts and added facilities in public transportation. The move is expected to make travel safer, easier, and more dignified for senior citizens.
Nepal has been observing National Senior Citizens Day since December 2021. The day commemorates 26 December 1994 A.D., when the government first announced the old age allowance program.
