IGP Khapung Says Police Struggling to Resume Work After Widespread Arson, Looting

Kathmandu: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Kuber Khapung has said that returning to regular work has become difficult as recent incidents caused massive damage to police infrastructure. In a video message released on Sunday, he praised the spontaneous support and goodwill shown by the public during this crisis.

IGP Khapung said the recent events inflicted unimaginable and irreparable damage on the country, with the Nepal Police bearing the greatest loss. “Our police offices have been destroyed by fire. Many materials, including vehicles and uniforms, have been burnt and lost, making it difficult for us to return to regular work,” he said.

He expressed gratitude for the community’s spontaneous campaign to restore police offices. “The way the public has launched a campaign to bring the police back to office in this difficult time is very commendable. The sense of belonging shown by them has made me very emotional,” Khapung said.

He added that the incidents proved those trying to displace the police are nothing more than criminals. He also praised citizens for helping clear collapsed walls and burnt materials, reviving the spirit that “the police are for us” within society.

In his message, Khapung called for continued constructive cooperation from all sectors, including former police officers, local citizens, industrialists, businessmen, and the media. He urged everyone to move forward with unity, goodwill, and brotherhood, abandoning mutual animosity and revenge, to maintain peace and security in the country.

On 8 and 9 September, Gen-Z protests were held in several cities, including the capital. The demonstrations centered on the ban on social media, growing corruption and irregularities, the lavish lifestyles of leaders’ children, and the wider unrest in the country.

On the first day of protests, demonstrators were killed. On the second day, both protesters and police suffered casualties. During the unrest, public and private property was vandalized and set on fire. Police offices were particularly targeted, with arson, vandalism, and looting reported. Videos of protesters displaying stolen police uniforms, communication sets, and other equipment have since gone viral on social media.
