Fact Check: Did Oli Claim That Congress Gave Him The Responsibility To Kill Madan Bhandari?

Kathmandu: Over the past few days, a video has been circulating on social media claiming that CPN (UML) Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said Madan Bhandari was killed by the Nepali Congress. In the 27-second clip, Oli appears to say that Congress leaders tried to give him the responsibility to kill Madan Bhandari, but he refused.
However, an investigation by TechPana Fact Check confirms that the video is misleading. The clip is taken from an interview Oli gave to journalist Rishi Dhamala three years ago. In that interview, Oli was quoting a statement made by Nepali Congress leader Umesh Giri. That context has been removed, and the edited video is now being circulated as if it were Oli’s own claim.
Claim
A 27-second video clip was posted on TikTok at 1:55 pm on December 26, 2025, from an account with the username @nepolitics_. The video shows UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli speaking.
Text at the bottom of the video reads in English, “Congress Behind Bhandari’s D’e’a’t’h.” Another line says, “UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli claims in an interview with Rishi Dhamala that Congress was involved in the death of Madan Bhandari.”
The 27-second clip includes a portion of Oli’s speech. In it, he says that Congress leaders tried to give him the responsibility to kill Madan Bhandari, that he refused, and that he later faced threats. The clip then suggests that Oli said the Congress government killed Madan Bhandari.
As of the time of writing, the video has received more than 13,800 reactions and 306 comments. It has been saved 883 times, shared 1,116 times, and has around 350,000 views. See the original and screenshot.

Research
The TechPana Fact Check Desk searched for a Facebook page with the same name as the TikTok username to find related posts. The same clip was uploaded on that Facebook page at the same time. However, the caption on Facebook was in the name of Balananda Sharma. See the original and screenshot.

The desk then searched Facebook using keywords such as KP Sharma Oli, Madan Bhandari, and Madan Bhandari murder. During this process, a Facebook user named Purna Singh Bam Thakuri was found to have posted the same 27-second clip on July 24, 2024. The caption read, “Congress is behind the killing of Madan Bhandari! …… KP Sharma……🤔.” See original and screenshot. (Translation)

Similarly, a Facebook page named Loksewa Gol posted the same clip on December 22, 2025. Several other Facebook accounts are also sharing the video. See original and screenshot.

Journalist Rishi Dhamala appears in the clip. Many users uploading the video have claimed it was taken from an interview given by KP Sharma Oli to Dhamala. Based on this, the desk searched YouTube using the keywords Rishi Dhamala and KP Sharma Oli. The clothes worn by Oli in the viral clip match an interview uploaded by Prime Television on November 16, 2022. In that interview, titled “Oli exposed Prachanda-Madhav like this, excavations from ‘RAW’ chief to people’s war, Rawal-Bhusal’s warehouse,” the relevant statement appears between 56 minutes 19 seconds and 56 minutes 46 seconds.
However, the viral clip removes the portion spoken just before the sentence, where Oli says “Nepali Congress leader Umesh Giri,” and the portion spoken immediately after, where he says he saw Umesh Giri speaking on public television. By removing this context, the edited video creates the impression that Oli himself was making the allegation.
In the same interview, Oli also mentions that the then Home Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba was present during the discussion and that he was not allowed to question him. He then goes on to express doubts about the reason behind the killing of Amar Lama.
From these facts, it is clear that Oli was quoting a statement made by Nepali Congress leader Umesh Giri on the television program Janta Jan Chanan. That quoted statement was later edited and circulated without context. As a result, Giri’s words were presented as Oli’s own claim, creating confusion and spreading misinformation.
Claim
On social media, CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli is claimed to have said that the Nepali Congress killed Madan Bhandari and that he was also given responsibility for the murder.
Claimant
TikTok account @nepolitics_, Facebook pages such as Purna Singh Bam Thakuri and Loksewa Gol, and other personal Facebook accounts.
Fact
The video circulating on social media is edited and misleading. It is a clipped portion of an interview conducted by Rishi Dhamala on Prime Television on November 16, 2022. The full interview shows that Oli was not making the claim on his own behalf. He was quoting a statement previously made by Nepali Congress leader Umesh Giri on a public television program.
The video was manipulated by removing the beginning of the sentence, which identified Umesh Giri, and the ending, which clarified that Oli was referring to what he had watched and heard. This editing makes it appear as if Oli himself made the allegation.
Conclusion
CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has not made any new or personal claim that the Nepali Congress was involved in the murder of Madan Bhandari. The viral video removes crucial context from a three-year-old interview and falsely presents a quoted statement as Oli’s own. The content is misleading.
