Asheem Man Singh Basnyat, Who Made Pathao Synonymous With Ride-Sharing, Announces Candidacy From Kathmandu-1

Kathmandu: Entrepreneur Asheem Man Singh Basnyat has announced his candidacy from Kathmandu-1 in the upcoming election for the House of Representatives scheduled for 5 March. He has not disclosed whether he will contest the election through a political party or as an independent candidate.

Issuing a public statement on Sunday, Basnyat said the decision came after long reflection. He said his journey as an entrepreneur in Nepal, including job creation, failures, pressure, and a deep sense of responsibility, pushed him toward this step.

Basnyat said the uncertainty of the future despite capability, and the difficulty of working within the existing system, motivated him to take responsibility through politics. “I have not come to do politics, but to take responsibility,” he said, clarifying the purpose of his candidacy.

His key agenda includes promoting entrepreneurship and startups, ensuring accountability and transparency, and bridging experience with new thinking. He said his priority is to create an environment where young people can dream and turn those dreams into reality.

Basnyat also said good governance begins with a culture where those who work are accountable and decision-makers take responsibility. He believes sustainable change is possible by strengthening dialogue, mentorship, and collaboration between experienced generations and the youth.

Stating that this journey cannot be completed alone, Basnyat called for public support, suggestions, criticism, and active participation. “We must move one step forward together to fight for change,” he said. He urged citizens to join the effort to put into practice the belief that Nepal has strong potential.

Basnyat is known for introducing ride-sharing to Nepal through Pathao Nepal. Under his leadership, the platform helped build the country’s gig economy and popularize ride-sharing culture.

Since its launch in Nepal, Pathao has grown into a household name in ride-sharing. The company established its presence through features such as trained and verified riders, insurance coverage of up to Rs 1 million, and a 24-hour call center, making Pathao synonymous with ride-sharing services in the Nepali market
