Lack Of Clear Basis For Social Media Ban Led To Gen-Z Protest: Congress General Secretary Sharma

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has said that imposing a ban on social media without establishing a clear basis or narrative led to the Gen-Z protest in Nepal.

Presenting his report at a closed session on the second day of the party’s special general convention, Sharma said the then government led by KP Sharma Oli failed to clearly explain to young people why social media platforms needed to be registered.

“The government registered the social media bill without the consent of the ruling coalition. There was already widespread anger, particularly among the youth,” the report states. “Shutting down social media without developing a clear narrative on why registration was mandatory in Nepal, and without assessing the possible public reaction, led to serious consequences and ultimately pushed the country toward a Gen-Z protest.”

According to Sharma, while the immediate trigger appeared to be the shutdown of social media platforms, the Gen-Z protest was driven by deeper political, economic, and social factors.

The Oli-led government had decided to ban social media platforms that were not officially registered in Nepal. Sharma’s report notes that the Gen-Z movement took a more aggressive turn on September 8 and 9 following that decision.
