Viral Video of Teacher Beating Student at Khawalung School Sparks Outrage

Kathmandu. A video showing a teacher repeatedly beating a student at a monastery school in Kathmandu has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread public outrage and prompting concern from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Education.

The 32-second video, shared on Facebook by user Prakash Sapkota on Sunday night, shows a teacher repeatedly striking a student's palm with a thick stick while scolding the child. The student's cries of pain are clearly audible, while other students remain seated in silence, appearing frightened.

In the footage, the teacher can be heard accusing the student of disrespect before ordering the child out of the classroom after administering the punishment.

The video, posted at 11:29 p.m. on Sunday, had garnered more than 900,000 views, 13,900 reactions, and 5,600 comments within 13 hours, with many social media users condemning the incident and demanding action against the teacher.

The incident occurred at Khawalung School in Khumaltar, Kathmandu.

School Principal Sunil Rana said the video does not depict a recent incident, claiming it occurred about one and a half years ago. He identified the teacher in the video as Sona Rana, who, according to him, left the school in May–June 2025 for personal reasons.

Rana said the school has already informed the Kathmandu Metropolitan City about the incident and is also submitting a written report to the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.

According to the principal, the student was residing in the school's hostel at the time, and the punishment was allegedly related to an incident that had occurred there. He said the school had sought an explanation from the teacher after learning about the punishment.

Rana further stated that the teacher later left the school for personal reasons. However, following the video's circulation, the school has attempted to contact her again, but believes she may have already gone abroad.

A staff member at the school, meanwhile, said the incident occurred around February–March 2024 and speculated that the video, allegedly recorded by another teacher, may have surfaced due to internal disputes among staff.

The principal also said the child seen in the viral video is currently studying in Grade 4 at the school. According to him, when asked about the incident, the student said he could no longer remember what had happened that day.

Authorities have not yet announced whether a formal investigation has been launched.
