DoIT Introduces Accessibility Features to Promote Digital Inclusivity in Government Websites

Kathmandu. The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) has introduced a new web accessibility feature aimed at making government websites more convenient, inclusive, and user-friendly, particularly for people with disabilities and those dependent on assistive technologies, according to Director General Shree Chandra Shah.

Implemented under the Government Integrated Website Management System (GIMWS), this initiative enables government websites to be operated with a keyboard alone, without a mouse.

A ‘skip navigation’ feature has been introduced, enabling keyboard and screen reader users to bypass navigation menus and access the main content directly.

The department has also added alt text to images, logos, icons, and service-related information to support screen reader users. Error messages and suggestions displayed during form filling have also been designed to be easier to understand for assistive technologies.

Similarly, all ‘input’ areas, such as search and contact forms, now include clear names and labels to make them easier to use with screen readers. Visual indicators have also been added to help keyboard users identify their current position on a website.

Messages shown after form submission have also been structured to be easily understood by screen reader users. The department stated that while these improvements may not be highly noticeable to general users, they are intended to benefit those dependent on assistive technologies.
