Minister of Communications Slams NTA and Nepal Telecom for Delayed 5G Launch

Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority and Nepal Telecom for failing to launch 5G service despite repeated instructions over the past year.

Speaking during a discussion on the budget and programs for fiscal year 2082/83 at the Ministry on Tuesday, Minister Gurung issued a stern directive to both agencies to immediately move forward with expanding 5G services.

He criticized the claim that telecom services have reached across the country, calling it merely theoretical, and instructed officials to prioritize expanding 4G to people's homes. He also warned them to address recurring issues in internet and telephone services and to improve network quality, particularly along highways.

“NTC should be present where people need it most. 5G must be launched within this year,” Minister Gurung said. He also criticized Telecom’s weak publicity approach and urged it to inform the public about service expansion in areas like education and health.

In response, NTA Chairman Bhupendra Bhandari told the minister that preparations to launch 5G services are in their final stages, and that a tender process for network expansion will begin soon. Similarly, Telecom's Acting Managing Director Sabina Maskey Pradhan said that 4G expansion is ongoing and preparations for 5G are underway.

On the same occasion, Communications Secretary and Chairperson of the Telecom Board of Directors Radhika Aryal stressed that Telecom must improve its service monitoring mechanisms.
