Harka Sampang Criticized for Political Propaganda Using Balen’s Photo and Reference While Mourning His Father

Kathmandu: Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor and Shram Sanskriti Party Chairman Harka Sampang has been embroiled in controversy. He has been criticized after he made a video of a political speech using Balen’s photo and reference while Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) was mourning his father.
On Wednesday morning, Sampang posted a video on social media, in which Balen’s photo is overlaid. Some social media users have expressed anger at Sampang, saying that Balen’s video was made for political gain without considering human feelings when Balen’s father Dr. Ram Narayan Shah passed away on Monday and Balen is currently in mourning.
Balen’s photo is placed at the beginning of the 1-minute and 22-second long video uploaded on Sampang’s Facebook page, which has more than 1.2 million followers. Sampang has been making references to Balen during his party’s propaganda.
In the video, he said, “I met Balenji 4/5 times to start a party, he said, ‘Let’s do it, let’s do it,’ and where did he go?” He claimed that Balen did not want to go together and that a media trial is being conducted on this issue.
Facebook users criticized Sampang’s post for using Balen’s name for his own interests instead of expressing sympathy when he was grieving after the death of his father.
A user named Ashish wrote, “Balen is grieving the loss of his father, you should take care of human feelings at such times.” Another user commented that it was wrong to make such a statement at a time of grief and use it for propaganda, regardless of the context.
Sampang’s own supporters also considered it irrelevant. A page called ‘Shram Sanskriti Party Supporters’ disagreed with Sampang’s statement and wrote, “Respected Party Chairman/Mayor Hark Sampang, Mayor Balen Shah is currently in mourning. His father passed away and was cremated at Pashupati yesterday, so please do not share videos targeting him at this time out of humanity.”
Balen’s father died at the age of 77 at the Civil Hospital on Monday while undergoing treatment.
