Kathmandu. Nepal Police's Cyber Bureau has arrested two individuals in separate incidents involving the online harassment and defamation of women, including a man accused of posting obscene content on social media after the end of a romantic relationship.
In the first case, police arrested 24-year-old Saroj Karki, originally from Ward No. 6 of Champadevi Rural Municipality in Okhaldhunga and currently residing in Kathmandu.
According to the Cyber Bureau, Karki used the victim's Facebook account to publish obscene content with the intention of damaging her reputation, causing her mental distress. Preliminary investigations found that the two had met through their studies and had previously been in a romantic relationship.
Acting on the victim's complaint, a Cyber Bureau team arrested Karki from Kathmandu on July 10.
Bureau spokesperson and Information Officer Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Giri said the Kathmandu District Court has granted a five-day extension of Karki's remand for investigation under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063.
In a separate case, the Cyber Bureau also arrested 26-year-old Indian national Jabrul Haque of Assam for blackmailing a woman by misusing her obscene photos and videos.
According to police, Haque uploaded the victim's intimate content on TikTok in an attempt to defame and coerce her after she refused to comply with his demands.
Police said both cases remain under investigation.
