Kathmandu: A content creator has been brutally attacked for satirizing a political party and its leadership on social media. TikTok creator Arjun Khadka, known as “Arjun ARK,” has claimed that he was beaten by UML workers.
Khadka, who recently came into the spotlight for satirical videos targeting the Gen-Z rebellion and the CPN-UML, has posted photos and videos of his injuries, claiming that he was physically assaulted.
Arjun, who makes humorous videos with his mother, has more than 700,000 followers on TikTok. In an interview with TechPana, Arjun described the incident.
“Last night (Thursday) evening, I was returning to my room from my dance studio. I was walking in a hurry when a man called out to me. I approached him, thinking he might be a fan,” he said. “As soon as I got close, he brought up my satirical video titled ‘Jhole Gang Machhis’.”
According to Arjun, the man threatened him, asking, “Why did you make that video? Will you remove it or not?” When Arjun said he would not remove it, four other men came, surrounded him, and began beating him.
“When I said I would not remove it, four other men came and started beating me. I don’t know what they did. I fainted,” he said. “Later, when people nearby saw the situation, they ran away.” He claimed that the attackers were UML workers.
Arjun, who grew up with his mother after his father’s death, said she was devastated by the attack. In a video posted by Arjun, his mother is seen crying, saying her son is innocent.
“My son was beaten by four or five people. What did he do wrong? He has never harmed anyone,” she says in the video. A single mother, she tearfully said her son is her only support.
Arjun recalled his mother’s struggle and said, “I was attacked because of a video. After my father passed away, my mother suffered a lot to raise me and educate me.”
He said he is now afraid to go out. Despite that, he insists he will not bow to threats. Preparing to seek legal action against the attackers, he said, “I am afraid to go out now, but I will not remove the video even if it kills me.”
One of his protest-related videos, made during demonstrations against then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the Gen-Z rebellion, has more than 35 million views. Another has more than 1.6 million views.
Stand-up comedian Himesh Pant has condemned the attack on Arjun. He commented that physically attacking someone for making a roast or meme is an insult to democracy.
Pant wrote on social media, “Those who cannot tolerate humor, who cannot understand logic, and who ‘sing the leader’s bhajans after eating meat and rice’, they are the real burdens ruining the country.” He questioned the government, saying, “Will you protect the people, or will you protect the tyranny of those who eat meat and rice?”
