Kathmandu: Two major social media platforms, Meta and TikTok, have contacted the Election Commission to support efforts to ensure free and fair House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5. Both platforms have agreed to provide technical assistance to help control election-related misinformation that may spread on social media during the polls.
Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and TikTok responded positively to the commission’s request for cooperation.
“Representatives of Meta and TikTok have responded positively. When we contacted them, they appeared ready to help,” Bhattarai said at a press conference on Friday. He added that the commission is also working to contact other social media platforms. “The commission is confident that everyone will cooperate to conduct the elections,” he said.
Bhattarai further noted that the commission is hopeful other social media platforms will also extend support this time, as they have done in previous elections.
The Election Commission said it is coordinating with various companies to ensure effective implementation of the election code of conduct and to prevent possible violations through social media platforms.
