Kathmandu. The government plans to establish a Sovereign AI compute factory in Chobhar, Kathmandu, to provide artificial intelligence (AI) computing power to 10,000 young entrepreneurs, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle announced on Sunday.
Speaking at a post-budget press conference, Wagle said the government is preparing to procure thousands of AI processing units from the outset to support the initiative. He noted that the project has generated fresh enthusiasm within Nepal’s digital technology and fintech sectors.
According to the finance minister, the government also intends to invite internationally recognized AI researchers and Nepali-origin professors as fellows to contribute to the project’s development. He said prominent figures, including Dr. Sameer Maskey, founder of the Nasdaq-listed AI company Fusemachines and a professor at Columbia University, are providing key support to the initiative.
Wagle stated that data security and digital sovereignty were major considerations behind the decision to establish a state-led Sovereign AI computing infrastructure during the initial phase. He expressed confidence that substantial private sector investment would follow once the government lays the foundation.
The finance minister further said Nepal could unlock significant economic opportunities by utilizing its clean energy resources not only for electricity exports but also for powering domestic AI computing infrastructure. He described the initiative as a potentially transformative step for the country's digital economy and innovation ecosystem.
