Election Commission Launches EIDC To Counter Misinformation

Kathmandu: The Election Commission has launched the ‘Election Information Communication and Coordination Center’ (EIDC) to make the upcoming elections more systematic and technology-driven. Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari formally inaugurated the center on Friday.

The EIDC has been established by upgrading the media center that was used in previous elections. According to Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, all election-related activities, news, and information will now be disseminated from this center in an integrated and effective manner.

The Commission is also preparing to set up an ‘Information Integrity Promotion Center’ to discourage the spread of misinformation and misleading content during the election period. Representatives from various government agencies will be involved in this mechanism.

The initiative has been designed considering the growing risk that false content generated through artificial intelligence and deepfake technology could affect the fairness of elections. The center will monitor social media platforms, verify information, and publicly clarify false claims.

Spokesperson Bhattarai said the Commission is preparing to directly collaborate with technology companies, including Facebook’s parent company Meta, to prevent the spread of fake content and misinformation on social media. If monitoring finds content that violates the election code of conduct or creates public confusion, the mechanism will recommend action to the relevant authorities.
