Kathmandu. FonePay, Nepal’s payment system operator, has integrated with global payment giant UnionPay International, enabling wider cross-border digital transactions nationwide. The collaboration was formally announced at an event held in Kathmandu.
With this integration, UnionPay users from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and other countries will now be able to make QR payments at more than 2 million FonePay QR merchants throughout Nepal.
Following the integration, international visitors will be able to make payments at hotels, shops, restaurants, and other businesses in Nepal using the UnionPay mobile application available in their home countries.
Speaking at the event, FonePay Chief Executive Officer Diwas Kumar said the partnership marks a significant milestone in connecting Nepal’s digital payment ecosystem with a global network.
He said the integration not only highlights Nepal’s growing digital infrastructure but also positions the country as a “global payment-ready” destination.
UnionPay International Vice President Zhuang Bei expressed satisfaction over the collaboration, stating that Nepal’s expanding QR payment system and growing tourism sector make it an important market for digital payment expansion.
He added that UnionPay users will now experience seamless digital transactions in Nepal similar to what they enjoy in their home countries, through FonePay’s extensive merchant network.
The development is expected to provide a major boost to Nepal’s tourism economy. In 2025, Nepal welcomed over 1.15 million tourists, with a significant share of visitors using UnionPay services from China and other Asian markets.
FonePay has already established partnerships with payment systems from more than 13 countries across South Asia and the ASEAN region, including India’s UPI and Alipay+.
Currently, FonePay serves over 2 million merchants through a network of more than 60 banks and financial institutions in Nepal. UnionPay, meanwhile, operates in 183 countries and has issued more than 10 million physical and virtual cards in Nepal alone.
