Global Ride-Hailing Giant Uber Begins Operations in Nepal

Kathmandu. Global ride-hailing platform Uber has entered the Nepali market through a strategic partnership with local platform TaxiMandu, beginning a test launch of its services in the Kathmandu Valley from Wednesday.

TaxiMandu officials confirmed that passengers can now book rides to various destinations within the valley through the Uber app. Over the past few days, the company has accelerated the onboarding process for bike riders, taxi and car drivers, as well as passengers ahead of the launch.

Under the partnership agreement, Uber will provide its globally used technology platform and mobile application, while TaxiMandu will oversee local operations, driver management, and service expansion within Nepal. A formal announcement regarding Uber’s official Nepal launch is expected in the coming days.

On Tuesday, Uber had hinted at its arrival in Kathmandu through promotional emails sent to registered users. The company has also started offering promotional discounts through its app inbox to attract early users.

Uber’s entry is expected to intensify competition in Nepal’s growing ride-hailing market, where platforms such as Pathao, inDrive, and Yango have already established a strong presence.

Industry observers believe Uber’s arrival could particularly benefit foreign tourists visiting Nepal, many of whom are already familiar with the platform’s services internationally.

Founded in 2009, Uber currently operates in more than 10,000 cities across over 70 countries worldwide. While the company is initially focusing on the Kathmandu Valley, it is also preparing to gradually expand services to other major cities across Nepal.

Beyond ride-hailing, Uber also operates services such as Uber Eats and Uber Freight in international markets.
